Why we do what we do.

What we do is physically and emotionally demanding work. At times we are not even appreciated by the people we are helping. Despite the difficult and demanding nature of our work, each of us is committed to the same principle: We are the only chance our clients have to seek justice.

So how did this dedicated group get started?

As a kid, I wanted to be lawyer. I loved shows where lawyers took cases not worrying about winning but because it was the right thing to do. When I thought about what I wanted to do with my life, I wanted to do the right thing and help people. Becoming a lawyer seemed like one way to live that kind of life.

Even though I wanted to be a lawyer, school was always tough for me. By the time I got around to graduating from college, I was broke, tired of school, and wanted to get on with being a grown-up. The thought of three more years of school made it easy to put the idea of being a lawyer on hold.

Despite my decision, there was a nagging sense something was missing in my life. I realized that what was missing in my life was a sense of purpose and impact. Seven years after college, I knew that to have the sense of purpose and impact in my life I needed, I must fulfill my dream of being a lawyer. While it took several years of trying and a ton of setbacks, at thirty-one, I started law school.

Despite a tough three year struggle, as I was graduating, I wondered what kind of clients I needed to scratch the itch I had to do the right thing. In my first job, I tried lawsuits and experienced the adrenaline rush (and the occasional crush) that comes with trial work. My first clients were businesses arguing about who owed who money. While I loved working up cases, I did not enjoy that kind of fight. The fight I liked was helping people who could only hire a lawyer willing to wait on getting paid when, and if, there was a recovery. Helping these clients made me feel like I was doing the right thing.

Unfortunately my first firm did not share my feelings. The gambler in me absolutely loved the risk, the David and Goliath aspect of that kind of representation and the ability to control my own destiny. Given an opportunity to only work for those kinds of clients, I struck out on my own. To truly help my clients, I needed people helping who were as passionate about helping my clients as I was. Through great effort, I have such a group of committed people working with me. We are devoted to the following principles:

  • We are the only chance our clients have to seek justice
  • We can only help our clients working as a team
  • We do more than expected
  • We are ready to help.

While we faced many hard fights together, the heart of this wonderful group was never more tested nor found more true until we accepted the request of the family of a young man injured by a piece of equipment. As a result of the accident, his mental capacity was reduced to that of a young child. His family lost a husband, father and bread winner. They were desperate.

The equipment had a serious safety flaw. Even though the manufacturer knew people made the same mistake our client did, their position was that if people used the equipment as shown in their owner's manual, no one gets hurt. They were not going to publicly admit there was a flaw because it would hurt sales and expose them to lawsuits from people injured by their equipment.

Taking this case meant accepting a physically, emotionally and financially demanding task that few law firms would consider. We never hesitated. It was the right thing to do. After eighteen months of pouring more time, effort and money into the case than was financially prudent to do, the day arrived when the manufacturer realized that it must take care of the family. Because we risked everything and worked together as a team, this family lives with dignity.

The people in this firm are committed to the idea that because we work together as a team, our clients have an opportunity for justice. This deep commitment provides a strong sense of purpose and make us secure in the knowledge that what we do has impact.

This law firm is composed of everyday folks confident in a jointly held belief that together we accomplish incredible things. Each person knows that disappointments and setbacks are a part of life. Sometimes the dragon wins. Yet we never waiver in meeting the obligations to our clients. Because we are that kind of people, there is no Goliath this David will not take on.
